After School Coordinator

The Athenaeum Learning Center, an innovative private school in Pembroke, MA, is looking for a full time After-School Coordinator who is interested in helping us grow our programming.  We currently operate a full time academy and daily homeschool classes, and are looking to expand to additional after-school classes.

Hours are 3pm-6pm Monday through Friday, plus 6:00pm-8:30pm two Fridays a month for our Kids' Night In program.  There is some flexibility with time, but you must be here and ready to work by 3:30pm.

  • Design and teach extended day and after-school classes in our Makerspace classroom, for students from 4 years through 8th grade.  After-school classes we've had success with in the past include art and crafts, robotics, computer programming, games (particularly Pokemon).  A tentative list of after-school activities for next year is available here.  A listing of last year's programs are available here.

  • Help recruit after-school students.  This may involve helping to post about our programming on websites for parents on the South Shore, and attending the 2-3 Open Houses we host over the course of the school year (usually on Sunday afternoons).  You will be paid for time spent doing these things.

  • We expect the program to start very small, probably with 4-6 kids a day.  As the program grows, we will hire additional after-school teachers to help split up students by age/interest.  When this happens, you will supervise these additional instructors.

  • Maintain the classroom areas during the after-school period, cleaning up after classes and ensuring that any classrooms used are left in a ready-to-use condition at the end of each day.

  • Communicate with parents at drop-off and pickup in a professional manner.

  • Handle disciplinary and emergency situations, following school protocols when incidents occur.

  • Keep an inventory of Makerspace supplies, working with the Head of School to design inventory and purchasing plans for any materials needed for after-school classes.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience teaching a variety of STEAM-oriented topics to elementary and middle school students, including computer programming, robotics, math and science topics, and art.

  • Is supportive of innovative educational models, and willing to create an environment where students of a variety of ages and abilities can learn together.  Many of our families are homeschoolers and do not follow a traditional curriculum.

  • Is a flexible, creative, team player willing to take risks in designing and executing new programming, and adapting said programing based on the wants and needs of our students, family, and community.

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary is $20/hour.  This is a part-time position of about 15-20 hours a week.

  • Your children (aged 4-12) can attend any programs while you are teaching, and are eligible for discounts for our other programming.
