Athenaeum Academy is a full time private school serving children on the South Shore, from 4 years old through 8th grade. We provide a comprehensive, cohesive education based around a philosophy of respecting each child's talents, personality, and individual developmental path. Although our program is designed to meet the needs of highly talented students, our goal is to serve a broad population of students who will thrive in a small, active, hands-on environment.
Athenaeum Academy students study a broader range of academic topics than any other school on the South Shore. While the Forest School prioritizes play and pre-academic skills, our Elementary and Middle School programs are designed to marry rigorous academics with a fun, creative learning environment. In addition to a traditional roster of ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Arts, our students take weekly classes in engineering, computer programming, poetry, and chess. Students participate in weekly Math Circles, take history 2-3 times a week, and may take up to three foreign languages.
It's certainly not all work and no play: our classes are dynamic and fun, and more often than not include hands-on projects and games. Did we mention that Dungeons and Dragons is also a weekly class for upper elementary and middle school students? Students take classes that are creativity-based every day, and have ample time for free play both indoors and out.
Our Classrooms and Classes
Athenaeum Academy students are divided between four classrooms: Forest School, Forest Bridge, Upper Elementary, and Middle School. All students are assigned a grade based on age, but take academic classes based on interest and ability. This allows students to work at their own speed, in a classroom environment where they are always being challenged.
The school consists of 3200 square feet of indoor classroom space, with bright rooms with big, airy windows. Our outdoor classroom space consists of over 2 acres of playing field and woods.
Student and Family Life
We are the school that students don't want to leave at the end of the day. From their arrival at 8:30 to dismissal at 3:00pm (unless they stay for after-school programs or aftercare), they are playing, learning, and exploring their world. Our schedule is designed to be flexible, and nice weather might see our entire school moving its classes outdoors.
Families are an important part of our community, too, and our Parents' Group offers monthly coffees and several evening and weekend events throughout the year, allowing parents to build a strong community of people interested in alternative education.
For a small school, we certainly have a very impressive teaching staff. Our instructors are all subject matter experts with previous experience teaching students. With the exception of Latin, our foreign language teachers are all native speakers, and most of our teachers have MAs.
If you are looking for a small learning environment, staffed by subject matter experts who have experience teaching highly talented students, consider applying to the Athenaeum Learning Center. We are currently accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year, and have limited spots at every level for the 2017-18 school year.
