Director of the Forest School and Seasonal Programming

The Athenaeum Learning Center, an innovative private school in Pembroke, MA, is looking for a full time instructor to take the lead position in our innovative Forest School program, and to oversee our outdoor and STEAM-based vacation programming for students from 4 years through 8th grade.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with other Forest School instructors to design and implement a holistic, outdoor-based education designed for students who are approximately 4 through 7 years old.

  • Work with the Head of School to develop, advertise, and supervise vacation programming during February, April, and Summer vacations.

  • Maintain the Forest School classroom spaces, keeping them neat and organized and ensuring that they are left in a ready-to-use condition at the end of each day.

  • Be able to work from 8am-4:00 on Mondays, and 8am-3:30 on Tuesdays through Fridays during the school year, and 8:30-5:30 during vacation programs.  We ask that you try to be available for occasional school events that happen outside of normal hours, including occasional Open House and recruitment events, an annual school concert, etc.  These things can be scheduled around teacher availability.

  • Help supervise older students during morning recess and lunch.  All of the teachers are expected to work together to establish a break schedule that ensures appropriate supervision of all students.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience teaching a variety of STEAM-oriented topics to elementary and middle school students, including computer programming, robotics, math and science topics, and art.

  • Is supportive of innovative educational models, and willing to create an environment where students of a variety of ages and abilities can learn together.  Many of our families are homeschoolers and do not follow a traditional curriculum.

  • Is a flexible, creative, team player willing to take risks in designing and executing new programming, and adapting said programing based on the wants and needs of our students, family, and community.

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary is $46,000 per year.

  • The school is closed for 2 weeks at the end of December, a week in mid-June, and a week on August. In addition, you may take an additional 2 weeks of vacation, and 5 personal days, of your choosing.

  • We are able to offer health insurance.

  • We offer free tuition for any children from 4 years through 8th grade living in your household.  We are also able to offer a generous discount at a local daycare for children under 4 years.
