Math Instructor

The Athenaeum Learning Center, an innovative private school in Pembroke, MA, is looking for a full time Math instructor for students in grades 3 through 8.

Hours are 8am-4:00pm on Mondays, and 8am-3:15pm on Thursday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and teach math classes for students from 3rd through 8th grade.  Many of our students are gifted, including some quite asynchronous learners, and so math is done independently with considerable teacher oversight, with teachers giving short lessons and extra help as needed.

  • Teach weekly "math circle" classes.  Math circles teach advanced math concepts through projects, games, activities, and discussion.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings on Monday afternoons.  You will be part of a team of experienced educators building an exciting program model, and there is considerable flexibility for class ideas and projects.

  • Attend program open houses (usually 2-3 times a year, and arranged around teacher availability).  We sometimes have parent engagement evenings (such as our Winter concert) and you are encouraged to attend these evening programs to encourage students and meet parents.

  • Keep the classroom areas that you use clean and in order, ensuring that the physical space is left in ready-to-use condition at the end of the day for after-school classes, and for the next day's classes.

  • Work directly with the head of school to design classes, manage classroom inventory, and create lists of materials to purchase.

  • Communicate with parents in a timely and professional manner.

  • Handle disciplinary and emergency situations, following school protocols when incidents occur.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience teaching math to high-ability students at the elementary and middle school level.

  • Is supportive of innovative educational models, and willing to create an environment where students of a variety of ages and abilities can learn together.  Many of our families are homeschoolers and do not follow a traditional curriculum.

  • Is a flexible, creative, team player willing to take risks in designing and executing new programming, and adapting said programing based on the wants and needs of our students, family, and community.

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary is $35,000 for 10 months, between September and June.  We offer summer vacation programs, and there is the opportunity to teach during July and August.

  • Your children (aged 4-12) can attend any programs while you are teaching, and are eligible for discounts for our other programming.
