STEAM Instructor

The Athenaeum Learning Center, an innovative private school in Pembroke, MA, is looking for a full time STEAM instructor who is interested in helping us grow our programming.  We currently operate a full time academy and daily homeschool classes, and are looking to expand to after-school classes and more vacation programming.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and teach elementary and middle school classes in our Makerspace classroom for our homeschool, after-school, and vacation programming.

  • Work as part of our team of teachers to design and teach elementary and middle school classes for our full-time students.

  • Maintain the Makerspace classroom, keeping it neat and organized and ensuring that it’s left in a ready-to-use condition at the end of each day.  Work as part of a team of teachers to keep the entire indoor and outdoor spaces neat and organized.

  • Keep an inventory of Makerspace supplies, working with the Head of School to design inventory and purchasing plans. You may be asked to look for and apply for grants, donations, or discounts.

  • Be able to work from 10am-6pm Monday through Friday, and 12pm-8pm on Thursdays.  We ask that you try to be available for occasional school events that happen outside of normal hours, including occasional Open House and recruitment events, an annual school concert, etc.  These things can be scheduled around teacher availability.

  • Supervise students both indoors and out.  We have a 2 acre outdoor classroom, and students go outside to play every day.  You will be expected to work with other teachers to ensure appropriate supervision of the students while they’re outdoors.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience teaching a variety of STEAM-oriented topics to elementary and middle school students, including computer programming, robotics, math and science topics, and art.

  • Is supportive of innovative educational models, and willing to create an environment where students of a variety of ages and abilities can learn together.  Many of our families are homeschoolers and do not follow a traditional curriculum.

  • Is a flexible, creative, team player willing to take risks in designing and executing new programming, and adapting said programing based on the wants and needs of our students, family, and community.

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary is $42,000 per year.

  • The school is closed for 2 weeks at the end of December, a week in mid-June, and a week on August. In addition, you may take an additional 2 weeks of vacation, and 5 personal days, of your choosing.

  • We are able to offer health insurance.

  • We offer free tuition for any children from 4 years through 8th grade living in your household.  We are also able to offer a generous discount at a local daycare for children under 4 years.
